Cassian remembers Tirendall like this: a boy of middling height with hair the brightest red bent over a tome in a sun-filled room. Dust motes float throughout the room languidly and the smokey fragrance of myrrh seems to hang in the air. Everything is still and there is no sound save for the occasional rasp as Tirendall turns the pages.
It's a memory that always brings a knot to Cassian's throat. If only their entire lives, their entire existences, could always be like this - the two of them squirreled away with all the knowledge in the world within arms reach. If only it would last for all eternity. But even mages are bound by the laws of the world and even mages must follow the river of time's flow for even if it can be slowed it will not stop.
He remembers too that Tirendall was utterly disinterested in eternity. "What," his friend had laughed in that lilting way that reminded him of warmed mead, "who would be foolish enough to turn over the laws of the world?"
Cassian does not say anything. Only feels the quiet certainty settle into his heart as his eyelashes kiss his skin.
You are going to leave me, he says in the dark of his room.
You will break the promises we made together, and you will hate me before your life has run its course. You will hate me more if it never does.
He remembers clearly, his friend's hair tied up in a pony tail, waving in the wind as he left Vhosphel. It is the first of many betrayals, it will not be the last.
