The Taipei of my memories is not 101 towering in the distance looming over streets filled with people and cars.

It is the foot of Yamingshan, the small cluster of houses rising into the hills, the quiet sleepy shelves stacked with pots and plants and moss, and the sound of water dripping somewhere unseen. It is the street that catches the sun between the hours of 2 and 5, the school track walked by children and grandparents and sometimes even pet pigs. The ding of the 7-11 door, the chunk of sodabingbang breaking in your mouth, the baked jidanbing and the smell of beef noodle soup. The grandma who waved on the way to school, the sound of baseball in the distance, the misplaced french bistro drowning in ivy.
